Texas Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT)

Course Details:

This course is designed for individuals wishing to obtain an Texas Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) License.

The course consists of a series of lectures on the introduction to backflow, hazards of backflow, basic water hydraulics, backflow prevention assemblies, backflow prevention assemblies, devices and methods, federal and state (Texas & Arkansas) backflow rules and regulations, responsibilities and liabilities; field testing procedures, troubleshooting backflow prevention assemblies, and cross-connection control programs.

The course includes 12-16 hours of hands-on field testing and troubleshooting of the Reduced Pressure Assembly (RP), Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA), and Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assembly (PVB) in a controlled laboratory setting.

Learning Outcomes:

• Students will demonstrate how to field test properly operating and malfunctioning backflow prevention assemblies (reduced pressure principle assembly, doublecheck valve assembly, pressure vacuum breaker assembly, and spill resistance vacuum breaker assembly in a controlled laboratory setting.
• Students will identify hydraulic conditions in a water distribution system that could allow backflow to occur.
• Students will interpret field test results for backflow prevention assemblies after conducting the field test.   

Must Know:

Students must attend the entire course and successfully pass a written exam (70% or greater) and lab practical for Certificate to be awarded.

After successfully completing the course, Students desiring to be licensed in the state of Arkansas must make application to the Arkansas Department of Health Protective Health Codes division to receive an Arkansas Assembly Tester Technician (ATT) License.

After successfully completing the course, Students desiring to be licensed as a Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) in the state of Texas must make application to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and make arrangements to take for the Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) License Exam.

Bring appropriate footwear for the lab. Your feet will get wet in this class! No open toe shoes allowed in the lab.
