Trenching Safety Course

Course Description:

This course is designed for employees who perform or supervise trenching and excavation activities.

Students learn to recognize the serious hazards associated with excavation work and the protective measures necessary to reduce the risk of cave-ins, engulfment, hazardous atmospheres, and other injuries.

Topics include trenching and excavation hazards, soil classification, sloping, benching, shoring and shielding systems, access and egress, spoil-pile placement, water accumulation, underground utilities, atmospheric hazards, confined-space considerations, inspections, and changing site conditions.

Learning Outcomes:

• Students will identify excavation and trenching hazards, including cave-ins, hazardous atmospheres, water accumulation, underground utilities, and unsafe soil conditions
• Students will determine appropriate protective measures, including sloping, benching, shoring, shielding, access and egress, and other safe work practices

Must Know:

Attendance is mandatory for the entire course to receive a Certificate of Completion.

Students are encouraged to bring questions or examples involving trenching and excavation operations from their workplace.
