Louisiana Backflow Prevention Assembly General Tester Recertification

Course Description:

This course is designed to train the student in the fundamentals necessary to field-test the various types of backflow prevention assemblies. The course is comprised of a series of lectures and hands-on training of properly operating and malfunctioning backflow prevention assemblies. The course includes hands-on field testing and troubleshooting of the Reduced Pressure Assembly (RP), Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA), and Pressure Vacuum Breaker Assembly (PVB) in a controlled laboratory setting.

This course is for individuals interested in obtaining a Certification to field test backflow prevention assemblies as a General Tester as outlined by the Louisiana Department of Health.
Prerequisite: Must register with the Louisiana Department of Health.

Learning Outcomes:

• Students will demonstrate how to field test properly operating and malfunctioning backflow prevention assemblies (reduced pressure principle assembly, doublecheck valve assembly, pressure vacuum breaker assembly, and spill resistance vacuum breaker assembly in a controlled laboratory setting.
• Students will identify hydraulic conditions tin a water distribution system that could allow backflow to occur.
• Students will interpret field test results for backflow prevention assemblies after conducting the field test.
• Students will identify cross-connections and determine which backflow prevention assembly should be installed to protect against backflow conditions.   

Must Know:

Students must attend the entire course and successfully pass a written exam (70% or greater) and lab practical for Certificate to be awarded.

General Backflow Assembly Tester Technicians submit their Tester information to the Louisiana Department of Health.

General Testers will take a comprehensive written and Lab exam at the end of the class.
